Poetry by Chris Preddle

"Accessible, scholarly and humane, Chris Preddle's poems juxtapose the personal and the historical, the domestic and the natural, the ancient and the present day. In lightly-handled forms and delicate music, they speak of change, ageing, love lost and found - the evolution and sameness of the apes of the titles - and trace the significance of the present in an over-arching view of history. This is an engaging first collection, genial, plain speaking and profound." Katrina Porteous

"Chris Preddle's poems have that sure sense of authentic feeling, expressed with an unfailing rightness in the images he searches for. He makes you look again at what you thought was familiar, and the poems renew the feelings of living and belonging we experience now." Stephen Wade

Chris Preddle was selected by Katrina Porteous as first-prize winner of the Biscuit Poetry Competition 2001. Born in London, Chris spent his working life as a librarian, first in public libraries in Elgin and Kendal, then in London with the children's charities Barnardo's and NCH. He has published poems in magazines, and is working on a translation of Sappho's poems and fragments. He lives with his partner Jacqui in Holme near Huddersfield, on a shoulder of the Pennines, where they walk and run.
